![]() ![]() The sympathetic division of the vertebrate autonomic nervous system has evolved the fight-or-flight response to counter stress-induced disruptions of homeostasis. Perception of a stressor triggers the stress response -The stress response involves activation of both the sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Stressors are stimuli that disrupt homeostasis. The adrenal glands release stress hormones such as cortisol as the stress response is activated and the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is activated. Interactions of the endocrine hormones have evolved to ensure the body’s internal environment remains stable.
